The entry of 950 rams from eight breeds sold across four rings at the Ãļ§Ö±²¥ supported multi-breed sale at Welshpool with 91 per cent clearance rate.

Marts The Heart: Welshpool Multi-breed sale

Texels led the day's trade topping the Shropshire Texel Breeders Association sale at 2,300gns for Clun Framework, a yearling ram from A.E. Williams, Newcastle on Clun, Shropshire. Home-bred on both sides and by Clun Diamond, it sold to D.W. Jones, Caersws, who also paid 1,680gns for another shearling from the same home. 

At 2,000gns was a yearling ram by Caereinion Emperor from Cefyn Pryce, Llanfair Caereinion, which sold to F. M. Williams, Llanidloes, with another from Messrs Pryce selling for 1,680gns to R.G. Jenkins, Welshpool. 

The pre-sale show champion under judge Andrew Reed, Haverfordwest, was the top price ram lamb at 735gns from S.J. Smith, Llanfair Caereinion, which was bought by M.P. Harding, Abermule. 

The 304 Texel yearling rams averaged £783.18 with a 99 per cent clearance rate, while ram lambs saw an average of £383.10 with a clearance rate of 83 per cent.  

 

1,500gns ram from Craig-Yr-Orsedd

 Bluefaced Leicester
In the Bluefaced Leicester ring S.A, and R.P. Jones' Craig Yr Orsedd flock, Conwy, hit 1,500gns for a home-bred yearling. By a Lowes Fell ram out of a home-bred ewe, it was knocked down to S.D.J. Williams, Llanidloes. 

 

Making 1,300gns was a yearling ram from the Gornal flock of D. Davies, Welshpool. Home-bred on both sides, it sold to L.E. Lloyd, Hereford. The Davies family also saw prices of 1,150gns and 1,000gns for their pen of shearlings. 

Top price in the ram lambs was 800gns twice. Firstly, for the pre-sale show champion, judged by Wales and South West breeders chairman John Armstrong, Herefordshire. This was a ram lamb from the Derwenlas flock from D.P. May, Powys. The Kildalloig sired lamb sold to M. Hunt, Wincanton. 

Also making 800gns was a ram lamb from S.A and R.P. Jones, Conwy, which sold to C.F. and S. Cotton, Staffordshire.  

Reserve champion also went to the May family, with a yearling ewe which sold for 700gns to P.S. Johnson, Lincolnshire. 

Border Leicester, 1,100gns

 

Border Leicester  
The Border Leicester section John and Gill Watkins, Hereford, took top price in the male and female sections.  

Top price of the day was 1,100gns for a yearling ram which sold to Michael Roberts, Mold.  

Female champion, a yearling ewe from the same home made 1,000gns to D.P. May, Welshpool. 

P. Kirkham and I. Bourne, Stoke on Trent, sold a yearling ram for 800gns to R.D. Livestock, Shropshire. 

The Watkins family also took 800gns for a yearling ewe which sold to M. Roberts, Mold.  

Champion and top price Suffolk at 1,400gns

Suffolk 
After being awarded Suffolk championship, a yearling from G.V. and J.A. Hardman, Shropshire, topped the breed at 1,300gns selling to Ryan Martin, Newtown. 

Yearling rams sold to 1,150gns twice. Firstly, for Messrs Hardman selling to J.N. Owen, Llanbrynmair, and then for T. H. Nicholas, Shropshire, selling to R.L. Bowen, Builth Wells. 

R. Martin also purchased a yearling ram from W.J.C Pryce, Powys, for 1,100gns.  

Charollais
Charollais topped at 850gns three times with two yearlings from Esmor Evans, selling to C.E. Pryce, Llanfair Caereinion, and J.J. Davies, Montgomery, followed by one from T.H. Roberts, Denbeigh, selling to A.M. Owen, Gwynydd. 

Charmoise  
The Charmoise Hill trade was dominated by B. Moseley, Ceredigion, who sold the pre-sale show champion, a yearling ram, for 1,500gns to E. Thomas, Shropshire. They then sold two rams for 1,100gns each to T. Mactaggart, Dumfries. 

Ram lambs topped at 550gns for Helen Roberts, Oswestry, bought by D.B. Davies, Pembroke.  

Berrichon
The champion, a ram from H. M. Powell, Churchstoke topped the Berrichon trade at 720gns when selling to J.H. and J.A. Vanstone, Devon. 

A. Bowen, St Clears sold a yearling ram for 600gns to R. Powell, Kelso.  

A ram lamb from B.J. Evans, Newtown sold for 320gns to D. Gwynne, Brecon. 

Hardy speckle  
Yearling rams led the Hardy Speckle trade at 1,400gns for T. Jones, Powys, selling to J. Williams, Powys.  

J. Williams, Powys, sold a yearling at 1,050gns to R. Williams, Llanfair Caereinion, and another at 1,000gns to A. Rees, Llanfair Caereinion. 

Aged rams topped at 850gns from A. Williams, Llanfair Caereinion, to T. Jones, Powys.
