Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has announced it will install fencing on a path in the Pentland Hills to improve safety for walkers using rights of way.
The move follows concerns about the presence of a bull in a field where walkers had previously been attacked by cows.
An SRUC spokesperson said: "Following an extensive review of grazing at Daisy Dell and Turnhouse Hill, and in consultation with statutory authorities and local stakeholders, we took steps in 2020 to keep cattle entirely separate from the area’s main right of way on a permanent basis to safeguard public access.
"Since then, at appropriate times for the protection of path users and cattle alike, in line with Health and Safety Executive [HSE] guidance, we have installed clear signage on the land we manage to notify walkers of the potential presence of bulls among livestock in those separated fields.
"However, these arrangements remain under continuous review. We want walkers to continue to feel welcome and understand the signage we use. We are therefore carrying out further works this summer to ensure that any small remaining potential for direct contact between people and cattle is removed through the construction of a short, fenced corridor."
The news comes as it emerged a member of the public was killed in a field containing cows and calves in Leicestershire on July 9, 2022.
In the last five years, 32 people were killed on-farm by animals, 22 by cattle and 10 by bulls, new data from the HSE has found.
